Bihar is the 12th largest state of India, and it is purely dependent on agriculture. Our main source of revenue is Agriculture. The topography of Bihar is traversed by Ganga, Ghagra, Kosi, Bagmati, Burhi Gandak, etc rivers. which cause floods during monsoons and wash out several districts of Bihar. Bihar's 7.76% of geographical area is covered by forest. The national target is 33% for ecological balance. The pressure on the existing forest to meet the demand for timber, fuelwood, fodder, NTFPs, etc. in adequate quantity is increasingly high. Bihar has around 6.59 lakh hectares as wasteland categorized under barren and uncultivable land, 1.52 lakh hectares of fallow lands other than current fallows, and 0.19 lakh hectares of grassland. Persistent flood and drought-related problems is the main reason of poor agriculture production and crop failures many times in the State. Bihar's about 2.24 lakh hectares of land is salt affected which are either alkali soils or saline-alkali. High water expenditure, faults in water and soil management, excessive seepage from canals, high rainfall in monsoon, undulating topography, and recurring floods have also resulted in a large area of Bihar under waterlogging conditions.

Forestry in recent times has exhibited great potential to provide employment to rural and urban populations through industrial application and value addition.
